Check out some of the photos and results from the Ice Coast Challenge below. It was the first ever snowboard event with surf contest format – complete with a barrel ride. The event was put on by our friends at PIONEERS BOARD SHOP. Here’s their write up on the event plus results. Photos by NICK LAVECCHIA, ANDREW REBEIRO and BRIAN NEVINS.
The first ever Ice Coast Challenge went down on March 29th at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton Maine under sunny skies with 50+ degree temps. Over a hundred competitors made the pilgrimage to the mountain to be part of surf and snow history. Pioneers Board Shop of North Hampton, NH with the help of Trigger House pulled off the wave inspired course build over the 4 days leading up to the event. The course featured banked turns, a 600ft spine with hips, air sections, and two barrels sections allowing every participants to get a 10ft stand up tube to end their run.
Keeping with the surf theme the event was judged by Eastern Surf Assiciation Judges from the New England surf chapter. The riders were judged on their two best waves and scored out of a possible 20 points just like scoring in a surf contest would work. Top riders from each division advanced on to a final where riders were judged on their final run. The men and women open first place finisher each earned a 5 day surf trip to Puerto Rico thanks to SASS Global Travel, Lost Enterprises and Concepts. The event featured an on hill boat bar and huge crowd that came out to watch the event, enjoy the Sam Adams, and listen to all day live music!
