The contest site had the worse waves in town (Ruggles and the other points were firing, but Sid left those to the locals. Still, waist to head high surf rolled through with perfect offshores all day. Cold overcast weather in the morning cleaned up by 11 o'clock to sunny skies and good waves - still 43 degree water though. The turnout was great with 36 surfers.

NEWCASTLE WQS LATE ENTRANT CHRIS WARD SURFING THROUGH TRIALS
4/4/03 Had Chris decided to enter on time he wouldn't have had to surf until today when the top ranked seeds surf. It didn't seem to bother him as he has won his first five heats and is now in the round of 64. If anything, it shows his focus on doing well on the WQS. It's been a chance to get some more heat wins under his belt since deciding to make competitive surfing his focus. Last year the same thing happened (he decided to beach enter and had no seed) to Aaron Cormican at the WQS Outer Banks pro and he went on to win the event.

WQS UPDATE: CHRIS WARD AND GEOFF BRACK QUALIFY FOR WCT 2004?

3/30/03 If the 2003 WQS tour ended today, Geoff Brack would qualify for next year's WCT. Geoff will have to work extra hard to make this a reality though. He finished 225th last year on the WQS which slots him two to six rounds back from the top seeds. Geoff has surfed in two contests that not many surfers attend due to the locations and intensity of the surf. At the 4* Hang Loose pro in Fernando De Naronja, Brasil, Geoff made it through two heats only to get very sick and lose his third heat due to lack of energy. At the 3* WQS Hansen's Energy Pro at Pipeline, Geoff made it through tw

One of the favorites going into the King of the Peak (Sebastian Inlet) last weekend, Aaron Cormican couldnt put together the form that had Slater on the ropes last year until too late. Aaron floundered on day one and looked set to repeat until he surfed against contest leader Bryan Hewitson (tied with CJ Hobgood with 9 skins) in the last heat of the contest. Aaron broke his board without securing the score needed to win. He then paddled back out to beat Hewy on a broken board and forced a surf-off with CJ.
